PostSubject: Help your PS3!!!   Fri Mar 27, 2009 4:49 pm

So with the fact that mine just died, i decided to try what people were saying by removing and re-inserting the hard drive (HDD). well needless to say it didn't work but i did discover something important. When i took the hard drive out the dust that had collected was fuckin outrageous, even though mine was standing vertical there was still a large amount of dust on the hard drive. I strongly recommend that you take your hard drive out once a month to clean and check for dust buildup whether your ps3 is vertical or horizontal just do it!!! I can only help but feel maybe this could've helped save mine.

UPDATE!!!! READ BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!!!!!----------------------------

Sony just informed me that the second
you severe your hard drive connection from the PS3 you are going to
probably lose your data unless you have it backed up. They informed me
the other day that it doesn't matter if you try putting an hdd into
another ps3 or back into your own, but upon doing this you will have to
reformat, thus losing all your data. So the approach i would take would
be to buy those cans of compressed air and clean the hdd housing out
that way. That way the dust is removed without you severing your
connection between your ps3 and hdd. However if you have all your data
backed up to another source and can recover it, you are ok to remove
your hdd but you will just have to take the time to reformat before
your ps3 will work again.

i just took out my hdd to clean like you said and i didnt need to format it (THANK GOD). i think if you put the same hdd in the same ps3 you dont have to format it but i cant say this will 100% of the the time.

by the way i cant back up my data because i always get error 800283E4 the back up process could not be completed. u have any idea on how to fix that b?c i cant find nothing on the internet. is there a way to back up the hdd without a ps3

hmmm the person that i talked to at sony said the second u disconnect ur hdd from ps3 if will ask u to reformat maybe u got lucky, maybe they misinformed me, but i know without a doubt if u put it into another ps3 it will ask re-format. dont know about ur error message u may want to call sony and ask about it. the only other way that i know to back up info is what im about to attempt which is to buy an external hdd cover, put the hdd in the cover and transfer the data to an external hard drive, i hope this works b/c its the only chance i have of saving my info. i'll let u all know how it goes when i attempt.

p.s. was there a lot of dust in your hdd ruthless?
