| Just though everyone should know that port forwarding on you router/wireless access point could lessen the amount of lag in BF:BC. I went to this website, http://www.portforward.com/, and followed instructions for my router manufacturer/model, to port forward my PS3 to play BF:BC. I noticed a difference and went 54/5 my first match (Quantum witnessed). If anyone needs help then just hit me up. |

| I'm tech retarded, I'm interested but I dunno what all that is about. I found my router on the list though, NetGear WGR614 v7. edit: I have a brandew new RCA cable modem too, and lately I've been bypassing the router all together and hooking it straight up to the PS3. Good? Bad?

For example, if you were to time yourself running through your house, end to end, but you had to stop and open up every door and then close it before you could continue, your time would be slow. But if you were able to open the doors first and not have to close them, then you could have a faster time. |

Yeah It could be faster but you cant do much in the way of advanced programming with a modem in terms of routing, but common sense does tell us that if you take a step out of the process, then the process is usually quicker....I dunno you would have to run ping/lag test set up both ways to really tell. |

| ever since you said something to me since i got on i've been f'ing with it all day and could use some help.
ok 1st for my router it says you have to create a static ip address and the default should be 198.168.1.1 and that is most likely what the ip address listed on my computer would be. i do have that as listed as the default ip address, but it is next to the title default ip address. but another ip address is listed next to the title ip address when i pull up ipconfig/all on the command prompt 2nd what it tells you to do on my router was quite easy about the bfbc ports and psn ports to open thats all done and ready to go
the thing im trying to understand is what ip address my ps3 needs. should i just leave it as it is, or does it need to be the same as the one listed on my pc? |

| I don't know if this is even an issue for me, I'm on all new equipment with my router wired to the ps3. Any lag I have is fixed when I plug in the recharge cable. << It works evertime, the controller lag happens either at the start of a game or after a death. The dns errors and other signing in problems I have are when starting up, rarely when playing, I only get dropped when everyone does.
If I had lag issues there's no way I could be as effective as I am with the PP is there? I have been having all those problems I listed in the post I made, but so is everyone I guess. Also this looks like a major hassle for larry from what I just saw in the chat. I don't particularly want to ask him to go through all that again.
Oh and just to be perfectly clear when we talk about 'lag' we're talking about input lag are we not? I dunno what to call it when you can't lock on to jdam or rockets don't explode silos, but people seem to refer to that as lag too.
edit: I prob should do it because fractions of seconds matter very much to my playing style on spec ... and I call bullshit on mic quite a bit, don't I? lol One other thing is that my iMac and PS3 are the only devices hooked up to the router. |

wired does help, I am wired, but port forwarding is that little extra on top, know what I mean? |

| Okay, I've been farting around with this all day and can't get it to work. I followed the steps and it told me to set up a static IP address. In order to do so I had to call my ISP and get the DNS name which I did. After inputting all the information my pc won't connect to the internet. What am I doing wrong? In order to connect I have to set up my connection to automatically obtain the IP and DNS. Please help! |

Damn that sucks, sorry. The only thing that I can think that you did was that you assigned the same ip address (static) to your PS3 that your router gave to your computer (dynamic or dhcp). That will prevent your computer from getting on line when it was just working before you started trying to give your PS3 an ip. If you let me know what your router brand/model I can help you out. |

I would fall into that category. I'm frickin clueless when it comes to this shit. It's amazing I was able to connect my PS3 to the internet at all. lol. Anyway, I need to do something cuz I'm playing like shit. Part of it is my style of play. I rush into the fray and die alot in the process. The other part has to be my connection. When I fill a guy full of lead and he turns, shoots twice and I'm dead, there is a problem. I looked at my connection status on the PS3 and it says I'm at NAT 3 with a 50% signal strength. Again, not sure what all that means but from what I've read that's not too good and could be a big reason why everyone seems to have fractions of a second better reaction time than me. I'm just hoping someone can walk me through this like I am a 5yr old because this crap is getting really frustrating. I know I'm better than how I'm playing now. |

| Larry should be able to help you, but i know that anything wireless under 85% connection is going to lag constantly not to mention the NAT3!!! I'm somewhat clueless to this shit but i know no one should be NAT3 that is terrible for gameplay and larry told me yesterday that it's not good for your ps3 you need to make some changes ASAP. i dont know how far you are from your router max but before i did something i was at like 40-50% and it was terrible. my solution was to buy a range booster. the simple thing here is that the booster plugs into any socket and as long as it is in range of your router, it picks up your wireless signal and resends it out even further to the little 360 degrees area that the booster encompasses. i put mine in the same room as the ps3 and my connection is always 100% now. you should look into this imo.
also on a side note max i seem to see you playing alone alot. i think it would really help your play if you got to squad with ppl more often, unless im just never around to see this? but the more you play with ppl ive noticed the better your play seems to get, you die less and kill more. |

Yeah, I agree I need to play more with the clan. Seems when I try to join though it is either full or I get put on the other team. Playing against you guys certainly won't help me die less. lol. I've been playing with Nihil quite a bit lately. Most of you guys play CQ mostly and I need to play that more as I'm just not comfortable with the maps and the different strategy. I'm definately open for some constructive advice. As for the port forwarding thing I think I have figured out what I need to do. I'm just having a problem creating a static IP on my PS3. I have followed all the instructions but when I test the connection I get a DNS error message. I called my ISP again to make sure i have the correct DNS primary and secondary and I do. I can't figure out why I am getting the error. Larry, where are you? I need your help! |

| Okay, I spent all damn day fuckin around with this and trying to get the NAT from 3 to 2. I was able to set up a static IP, I forwarded all the ports, I re-started my router and PS3. I visited multiple forums and read through every thread on how to get the NAT from 3 to 2. After hours and hours trying everything I read with no luck, someone suggested that I need to update the firmware on my router. He also suggested that I undo the forwarded ports and just open the DMZ to my PS3 Static IP. I followed these suggestions to the letter and voila! Finally I have a NAT 2.
Now my question is since I have the DMZ and have achieved the glorious NAT 2 is there any advantage to going back and forwarding the ports again?
P.S. If you guys only knew how retarded I am when it comes to this stuff. When the day started I hardly knew what any of this crap meant. I'm quite proud of myself at the moment.

Or maybe Larry will have an easier time helping us both, since they're probably very similar. |

| It says Type 2.
I have a Mac BTW. Right now my set up is a new model 'DCM425' (like I have a fucking clue what that means lol) RCA cable modem connected to that NetGear WGR614 v.7 router by ethernet cable. Then both my iMac and PS3 are wired to that router by ethernet cable, oh and I have the PS3 connected to the first roter LAN port not the 2nd. I have TimeWarner RoadRunner, they didn't particularly give me a choice in modem and I dont know shit about it anyways. But it is pretty new and it seems fast, there's no waiting at all for webpages and stuff like that. It's says digital broadband on top! lol |

| Max, hey sorry I missed all of your post, but it sounds like you learned some lessons the hard way...funny but not funny, know what I mean. Yeah it is good that you got the nat 2 instead of 3 (voip/mics usually poor quality with nat3). Nat 2 is the best to have connected to a router. One question though, is there anyway that you can wire your ps3 into your router as opposed to a wireless connection. You will see your biggest improvement there. If not then you might (if you can) get a better router with a larger broadcast area, or a signal boaster/extender. 50% is not good for the lag. Your router should be as high as you can possibly put it, nail that bitch to the ceiling if you have to....as you will get a better signal area. Be carful with a DMZ because it is a lot less secure than port forwarding, please besure to turn it off when you are not playing with ps3. If you have anymore questions, send me a message when im on the PS3, and I will try to help you out. |
