bad news..

my ps3 overheated-_-.. so now the damn thing
wont turn on. when i press the power button
it turns green for a second then turns yellow,
beeps 3 times and turns red......im not going to be on
4 a while...im calling sony tomorow

you got ylod, same thing i got, you basically have 3 options

1. call sony to repair, i would assume you like me r probably out of warranty so will cost you $150
2. buy a new ps3
3. find a electronics store that can fix it, kinda risky though if you ask me i trusted sony instead

if you take option one i suggest going to playstation.com and finding the section to submit your order request online, this speeds up the process by about 2-3 days, because the computer can process this faster because it will go straight to the computer, if you call they are only gonna tell you they need to fix or replace, they will replace make you an order request than you have to wait for them to process the paperwork, i suggest you do it online like i did, took them about 10 days total to get me box, ship, and get me another ps3 back. was without mine for about 2 weeks exactly, so good luck

what model is your ps3?

also i hate to tell you, but if you dont have any of your data backed up, its fuked and you've lost it all, except bad company info cause thats on their servers.

That's the thread in the tech forum about dust and removing the hdd. I should start doing this seems like a lot of people's PS3s are dying lately. I've been using it as my primary DVD player after my other ones died, that's probably not a good idea either huh? So if you back up your game saves on SD you're good to go removing the hdd? I think everything else is saved on servers or PSN. I have the 40 GB which I think was cooler than earlier models. Is there anything else besides the hdd to open up on the PS3 and clean out?

edit: Once in a while in a freeze the front power button won't work regardless of how long you hold it .... What else are you supposed to do but turn it off at the back in those cases? That's only happened to me 2 or 3 times though.

Ive had that same problem where it didnt seem like it wanted to turn off but usually if you just wait, sometimes a couple minutes it will still turn off.

it overheated cause it has a factory flaw in the power source, the same reason mine did this.

about removing your hdd, ppl on the playstation forums told me that you can remove your hdd and not lose your data, so long as the hdd is put back in the same ps3 that it was removed from, dont know if this is true or not, because sony didnt send me my original back. so if you want to try i would still back up your data first. but it is def a good idea to clean out that hdd compartment cause the dust sure does collect in there.

and to the power not turning off, i think i've only had this once or twice where it didnt turn off in the first 3-5 seconds of me holding the button, if this happens you must hold the same button but for about 10-20 seconds, usually more along the lines of 20 seconds. it actually happened just last week and it took a while, but it turned off.

well at least it is not an xbox cause I think a lot of us would have had 2 or 3 xboxs by now but only one for each person I would have to say is great compared to the red ring of death a friend of mine had 4 times already in less than 2 years, sorry to hear about your PS3

Actually I had 2 xbox 360's first one got 3 rings of death within 6mo of purchase, sold this one broke on ebay for $250 since Xbox wanted $160 for replacement(they changed their policys since this happened) second one worked fine but sometimes it would get real noisy, had best buy in-store warranty on this one so just went to best buy and exchanged for ps3, they were cool as hell I actually got a free game and extra controller out of the deal even though the PS3 came out to $50 more. For anyone buying a new system I highly recommend getting your system at Best buy they have 2yr warranty at $59.99. I looked around at several different game shops and retail stores and almost all only offered 1 year warrantys for 30-40 bucks.

cuz i jus got on and i already called sony and i got it all
set up. so now im jus waiting 4 the box to get here
and i hope it doesnt take to long . so since this happened to
u already when i get da ps3 back do i have to set it up all over
again or what?

if u keep your hdd like i did, u will have to reformat it, doesnt take too long, but then u will have to update the software, which depends on your internet connection, which you will have to re-establish, esp. if its wireless, and for bfbc you have to re-download and install the conquest update, so basically yeah you have to re-do everything it sux

basically yes, the first gen ps3's both 40 and 60GB models are the ps3 that are prone to this. the average life span seems to be about 1 1/2 - 2 years before these ps3's crap out. it is a faulty internal power source that eventually fails and causes the ps3 to not start because it is not getting any power to the system. the whole reason i was upset here is because i feel this is sony's fault, theyre basically selling you a product that was doomed to fail at about 2 years, and isnt that a coincidence that you happen to be out of warranty by then???

honestly i dont know, they give you back the exact same model, but from what i saw on the ps3 forums the refurbished are being equipped with a new power source, the one that they currently use for the newer ps3's which is supposed to not have this happen. or at least the risk of this happening is supposed to be under 1% from what i saw. i can only guess now its all a matter of luck and how you take care of it, as for me i know my stuff never breaks because of me because i always take extremely good care of stuff, still got a ps2 from the year they came out and that things still works perfectly.

im guessing your asking about the info on your hard drive?

well here's the thing if you have it backed up your good to go just plug whatever it's backed up into ps3 when u get it.

if you dont have it backed up to anything (like I didnt) unfortunately your fucked. i tried 2 or 3 different methods to getting my info off the hard drive and it can't be done by regular ppl (by this i mean im sure sony can figure out a way, but what do they care right). long story short, if you cant turn on your ps3, you cant retrieve the data, and if you dont get your exact ps3 back (serial #) your fucked just like i was because you have to reformat because hdd's are linked to one ps3 only, and when you put it in another ps3 in order to make it work you must link it to that ps3, so good luck

I know that question wasnt directed at me, but you need to go to "sign up for playstation network" and then select "use existing PSN ID" instead of "create new PSN. Then you I think that you will need the email and password for your old profiles.

yea its something like deadly said, go to sign up and click already have an account something like that, and put in the email and password and you'll have your accounts back.
